12/5/09 Mesa LTD Class
“Criminal Justice Day”
Sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank

The Criminal Justice Day class is always very informative and lots of fun.  Lin Adams, Mesa LTD Class 1984 and Mesa Police Department retiree, organized the whole day for the class.

The day started at the North Mesa Justice Court with the Honorable Judge Lester Pearce

introducing the class members to the many aspects of the Justice Court System.  Then – a Mock Trial took place with Judge Pearce presiding and members of the class assuming the roles of the defendant, witnesses and attorneys.  The role playing was fun and very enlightening.

After traveling to the Mesa Public Safety Training Facility, everyone enjoyed a great Vito’s Pizza lunch with all the trimmings.

Afternoon speakers and their interesting topics included:

  • Sgt. Paul Cuellar – “FUSION Center"

  • Assistant Chief Mike Dvorak – “Welcome/General Information”

  • Cmdr. Doug Kline – “Internal Affairs”

  • Sgt. Mike Beaton & Ofcr. Keith Carroll – “Use of Force”

  • Ofcr. Gordon Leitz – “K-9 Unit”

Being introduced to the many fascinating details about the Police Department’s different components was extremely informative and, of course, meeting the K-9 Unit dogs was the highlight of the day.
